I am hanging out with my family in Northern California right now, for Thanksgiving Day 2019, so I'm going to keep this brief.
This cider has almost nothing to do with the movie of the same name*, but it does have a lot to do with another recent release, Smokin' Eagle. This is the second and final Eagle Rare bourbon barrel that my friend Dave Heinsch, owner and proprietor of The Westgate Bourbon Bar and Taphouse gave to me to age some cider in.
For this special release, I selected my classic Sacrilege Sour Cherry as the base, but added high-gravity sour cherry juice to the barrel alongside the cider, for a high-alcohol in-barrel fermentation, bringing the expected alcohol level to above 10%. After about two years in the barrel, the cider came out and I just could not resist touching it up with some Wooden Hellfire and some fresh Sacrilege.
Oh and part of the dealio with Dave is that he gets access to some of these bottles to sell at his shop, so in the event that you want more after you buy from me, make the drive to Beaverton and get one there.
Anyway, back to the T-Day festivities, and my paired bottles of Smokin' Eagle and Midsommar. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Eagle Rare Bourbon barrel-aged Sacrilege Sour Cherry blended with three-year Wooden Hellfire and finished with fresh Sacrilege Sour Cherry cider. November 2019 release, 4 cases.
*It goes like this. You know that scene in Ari Aster's masterpiece Midsommar where the guy has his lungs extracted through his back and is left hanging as torture? Well that's actually a real Viking thing called a Blood Eagle, and since the previous release in this mini-series is called "Smokin' Eagle", and this cider is cherry, I thought it would be cool to call this one Blood Eagle, but I was warned by my smart daughter that that's a disgusting name and no one would buy it and I should change the name. So yeah. Midsommar.
